Current personal or leadership goals:

I’m supposed to have goals? Honestly, I just want to keep enjoying what I do, giving back, and helping clients, colleagues and friends accomplish their own goals. As for personal goals, I’d also like to lose a few pounds, regrow my hair, and play first base for the Yankees.

What’s your best advice for current Leadership Charlotte participants about making the most of the experience?

Make it a point to keep in touch with each other by scheduling get-togethers at least every other month. Even if only a few can make it, you should have it on the calendar for everyone. Our class is overdue for a big reunion, which is exactly why I know this advice matters!

What’s one lesson or moment from your Leadership Charlotte experience that sticks with you today, and why?

During the auction at the final retreat, I tried to auction off the naming rights to classmate Matt DiAntonio’s unborn baby. I was told by his wife that wasn’t a good idea, so I have not tried that again. Lesson learned.

In what ways do you stay engaged in the Charlotte community, and how could fellow alumni join you?

There are so many ways to be involved. I often attend events hosted by the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, the Foundation for Carolinas, Charlotte Is Creative, and Blumenthal Arts. These are great ways to meet folks and learn about what is happening here. And I know there are hundreds of other organizations hosting events. My advice is simple: put it on the calendar and show up.

What’s your favorite way to recharge or connect with Charlotte on the weekend?

Right now I am rehearsing with some of the most talented actors and musicians in Charlotte for our next Charlotte Squawks! Come check it out June 4-28!!! Tickets can be found here: https://www.blumenthalarts.org/events/detail/charlotte-squawks-21-hold-my-beer (Yes, this is a shameless plug.)

Shout out a local nonprofit or initiative making a difference — what do they do, and why does their mission speak to you?

I am on the boards of NC Humanities (connecting North Carolinians with cultural experiences that inspire dialogue and community) and the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community (advancing philanthropy for causes here in Charlotte and around the world). Both are incredibly important to me for the good that they do across so many parts of our community.

How do you carry forward the Leadership Charlotte values in your daily life or work?

Two really profound lessons for me: First, leadership is not about bossing folks around; it’s about listening and helping others achieve their goals. Second, life and happiness are about circles of friends – join them, create them, and maintain them.

What’s one book, quote, or podcast that’s inspired your leadership lately?

I want to brag on one of my kids for a second. My son Zach is an aspiring journalist who created a Substack a year or two ago, and he’s been doing some amazing investigative reporting. I am inspired by his curiosity and tenacity! Check it out: https://zachkahn.substack.com/
