Please schedule by October 1, 2017 and complete before February 15, 2018

In order to gain an appreciation of the challenges faced by our police and fire departments, you are required to ride along with either (or both) group(s).  Many citizens of Charlotte are scheduling ride-alongs, so please make your appointment far in advance of your desired date.  Do not make the mistake of waiting until the last minute to schedule your ride.  Weekends as well as weekdays are available.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department: You can ride for either 4 or 8 hours in any of the thirteen (13) districts (see map other side). You may want to ride in your own neighborhood or choose another area of the city.  You should specify a duty shift and approximate date for participation. Shifts are 10 hours long: 1st shift = 6am start time; 2nd shift = 1pm start time & 3rd shift = 8pm start time.

You must be at your assigned location at least 15 minutes prior to the roll call to clock in with the sergeant on duty. Be sure to phone your assigned police station at least 1 day ahead of your appointment to confirm when to arrive.

To arrange a police ride-along, go to the CMPD website at

(A background check will be done, and if you have a police record, you may not be allowed to complete a police ride-along. Should this be the case, please contact Elizabeth McKee for a confidential discussion.)

Charlotte Fire Department: A 4- to 8-hour time commitment is encouraged.  To arrange for a fire ride-along, call 704-336-8565, ask for Deputy Fire Chief Pete Key, tell him you are in the current Leadership Charlotte class, and supply requested information.  The Chief will tell you which shifts/locations are available. If you leave a message, please speak clearly and leave a call back number.

Both the fire & police departments will ask you to sign a separate release form of their own.

A police or fire ride-along is a requirement for completion of the Leadership Charlotte program.
