Title/Company: Writer and editor
Hometown: Winnetka, IL
Education: B.A., Duke University; M.A. UNC Greensboro
Favorite Leader: I don’t really have one favorite. However, Mother Teresa, while a perennial choice, impresses me because she did not make speeches, but led by example, despite her continual self-doubts and crises of faith.
Person you would most like to meet: Elizabeth George. I greatly admire her writing, which is consistently excellent, and look to her for inspiration for making mine better.
Favorite Book: What Came Before He Shot Her by Elizabeth George
Favorite Place to Volunteer: The Mecklenburg County Jail, but it’s wherever I’m volunteering at the moment.
Personal leadership goal: To create vehicles within existing organizations to deliver the tools people need to change their lives for the better
Hottest news topic that fires you up: The growing income inequality.
“Theme song” or words you live by: The Prayer of St. Francis that begins, “Lord, make me an instrument of your peace…” (at least, I try to live by them).
Favorite Charlotte Activities: Walking and biking through tree-lined neighborhoods, attending street arts festivals, finding treasures at yard sales and, of course, volunteering.
Favorite LC Program Day or Favorite LC Memory: Diversity Day with its walk of privilege and opportunity to ask our friends honest questions in a cocoon of trust about differences, whether real or perceived, and receive straightforward answers.
Hot leadership idea for Charlotte: Adopt a nonprofit and offer alumni year-round volunteer opportunities that both meet the non-profit’s diverse needs and offer alumni flexible volunteer options that accommodate their lifestyles.
