Title/Company: Vice President of Public Relations and Communications, Better Business Bureau of Southern Piedmont
Hometown: Boiling Springs, North Carolina
Education: B.S. in Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill, Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) from PRSA Universal Accreditation Board, Certificate in Non-profit Management from Duke University, Certificate in Festivals & Events Executive Management (CFEE) from International Festivals & Events Association
Favorite Leader: Tom Bartholomy, President of the Better Business Bureau. I’m not just saying that because he is my boss. Tom is the best person for whom I have ever had the pleasure of working. He has made protecting consumers against scams and bad businesses his life’s work.
Person you would most like to meet: I have had opportunities to meet many entertainment, political, media, and sports celebrities, but the person I would most like to meet would be Michelle Obama. She is a fascinating woman. I have a great deal of respect for how she balances being the First Lady of the United States, raising a family, training a dog, growing a garden, supporting charitable causes, and so much more, all while looking fabulous and poised. I know she has staff to help her, but I would still be frazzled and crazy.
Favorite Book: Eat, Pray, Love – I long to go on the kind of self-fulfilling, soul-searching adventure that Elizabeth Gilbert did.
Favorite Place to Volunteer: Public Relations Society of America’s Charlotte Chapter. I have had the honor to serve as President this past year, but the most fulfilling work I have done with this organization is helping public relations professionals find work or advance in their careers.
Personal leadership goal: To change what I can change and to stop obsessing over what I cannot change.
Hottest news topic that fires you up: Discrimination in any manner that it occurs.
“Theme song” or words you live by: “Follow Your Bliss!”
Favorite Summer Activities: Taking my dog, Spotsy, to the Davie Dog Park in south Charlotte.
Favorite LC Program Day or Favorite LC Memory: CMPD police ride-along – I loved it! I went on calls that ranged from directing traffic around downed power lines, to a silent duress panic alarm going off at a home in Piper Glen, to a suspicious person lurking in the woods behind a home.
Hot leadership idea for Charlotte: Teamwork. We need everyone working together to accomplish great things for Charlotte. We can’t move forward if we are looking back to assess blame.
